Skodje Bridges

In Skodje there are two beautiful bridges from 1916-1919 constructed in cobblestone. The bridge across the Skodjestrømmen current is not suited for today's traffic, and was replaced by a new and modern bridge in 2004.

Today there are two bridges built in cobblestone in Skodje, across the currents Skodjestrømmen and Eggestrømmen. The bridges were constructed in 1916-1919, and when the bridge across Skodjestrømmen was opened it was the largest stone bridge in Northern Europe at the time.

The bridge across Skodjestrømmen is unfortunately not suited for the amount of traffic that passes there today, and a new bridge opened the summer 2004. The old bridge will be preserved as a cultural monument.

Sunnmøre Museum

Sunnmøre museum tells the story of the way of life in the old farming community. In the idyllic Borgund gable is a large collection of buildings from all over Sunnmøre.

The open-air museum consists of a collection of different building types from Sunnmøre. The museum area is widely used for recreation, and borders both the fjord and the forest. South of the museum area is Borgund church and the area where the medieval town of Borgund was located.

By the sea are the boat halls and the museum quay, where a large collection of Sunnmøre traditional boats is on display, and copies of ships and smaller boats from the Viking Age. By the quay are Borgundknarren, a copy of a merchant ship from the Middle Ages, and MK Heland, a fishing boat that participated in the English voyage during World War II.

Visit one of Norway's most remarkable churches at the island Giske. The saga island holds the famous Giske Church, built in the 12th century. Today the church is Norway's only marble church, and is still in full use.The church was built as a private chapel for the mighty noble family Giske, known as "Arnungane". The family was one of Norway's richest, and every other year the historical play "Giskespelet" is performed on an outdoors amphitheatre right by the church. The play tells us the story of how members of the Giske family were to play parts in important events in Norwegian history. There are a lot of dramatic stories connected to Giske Church, and the beautiful interior was made by the local craftsman "Tavle-Jacob" in the 18th century, after the church had been neglected for a long period of time. The symbolism in the colourful interior is both moving and grand, and a visit will give you a priceless insight into Norwegian church art in the 18th century. The church also has its own love legend, and there is a marble grave in front of the church where one of the unfortunate lovers is said to be buried
