Valldal
Gudbrandsjuvet

Gudbrandsjuvet

Gudbrandsjuvet is a 5 metre narrow and 20–25 metre high ravine through which the Valldøla River forces itself. The ravine is easily accessible from main road route 63 between Valldal and Trollstigen. The waters have formed a complex of deep potholes and intricate formations. The depth down from the surface of the water is about equal to the depth of ravine down to the river.According to a myth from the 1500's, the ravine was named after a man called Gudbrand, who ran off with his new bride and saved himself from his angry pursuers by jumping over the ravine at its narrowest point. Gudbrand was declared an outlaw for his deeds, and lived the rest of his life in a stone hut in one of the side-valleys above Gudbrandsjuvet. The valley is still called Gudbrandsdalen to this day. One thing the story doesn't mention is whether his bride followed him over the ravine…

Trollstigen.

Trollstigen is an impressive mountain pass that twists through eleven hairpin bends up the steep mountain sides in Romsdalen valley. The Trollstigen road connects Åndalsnes with the village of Valldal in Sunnmøre.

Trollstigen is one of the most iconic scenic routes in Norway. The Norwegian Scenic Route Geiranger-Trollstigen runs between Soggebru Camping in Romsdalen and Langvatnet lake in Geiranger. The scenic route cuts through Western Norway’s most awesome scenery andascends to an altitude of 852 metres above sea level. A dizzying view of steep mountainsides, towering waterfalls, deep fjords and lush valleys makes this stretch of road one of Norway's most dramatic and well-visited attractions.

The jaunt up the Trollstigen road reveals a masterpiece in engineering, but the spellbinding nature is even more impressive. Trollstigen is surrounded by colossal mountains such as Bispen (The Bishop) (1,462 m), Kongen (The King) (1,614 m), and Dronninga (The Queen) (1,544 m) to the west, and Stigbottshornet (1,583 m) and Storgrovfjellet (1,629 m) in the east. These mountains makes you feel tiny and you get a tingling sensation looking down at the valley floor.

Trollveggen/ Trollwall: (if we have time)

Trollveggen

At 1,000 metres, Trollveggen is Europe's tallest vertical, overhanging rock face.

The Romsdalen valley is long and narrow with majestic towering mountains on either side. Scandinavian rock climbing started in the Romsdal mountains, which boast some of the world's most difficult climbs. In the eighties, base jumping with parachute was banned at this site after a number of accidents with very expensive rescue operations. But Trollveggen still is a very attractive site for climbers and tourists.

On the opposite side of the valley, the Romsdalshorn peak towers to a height of 1,555 metres. By the E 136 road, at the foot of Trollveggen, there is a picnic area with a nice cafeteria, souvenirshop and toilets. It's highly recommended that you take a stop at Trollveggen Besøkssenter, where you can also watch the incredible film about the Trollveggen history of base jumping. Outside there is a popular children's play area and a marvellous view of the mountains.

Skodje Bridges (if we have time)

Skodje Bridges
Skodje Bridges

In Skodje there are two beautiful bridges from 1916-1919 constructed in cobblestone. The bridge across the Skodjestrømmen current is not suited for today's traffic, and was replaced by a new and modern bridge in 2004.

Today there are two bridges built in cobblestone in Skodje, across the currents Skodjestrømmen and Eggestrømmen. The bridges were constructed in 1916-1919, and when the bridge across Skodjestrømmen was opened it was the largest stone bridge in Northern Europe at the time.

The bridge across Skodjestrømmen is unfortunately not suited for the amount of traffic that passes there today, and a new bridge opened the summer 2004. The old bridge will be preserved as a cultural monument.
